A Greater Nuclear Threat than Iran?

I once had a coworker who grew up during the Cold War and served aboard the USS Kittyhawk and USS Constellation. He told me that as a young man, with all the threat of a nuclear holocaust, he would lie awake at night wondering if at any moment, the world would come to a fiery, radioactive end.
