Face it.
We can say all we want about what we believe, argue till we’re exhausted over our opinions and even our “convictions”, but I say you don’t know what you really believe until you are put in a situation where those beliefs are put to the test. You can say, “I believe in freedom of speech.” and that will sound universally acceptable (at least in this part of the world,) but how far are you willing to go for it? Would you be willing to die for it?
Right away, what comes to mind is the timeless speech of that grand statesman Patrick Henry, in 1775:
Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace– but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!
Two question I sometimes ask myself, in respect to my convictions. 1. Am I willing to die for them? and 2. (Just as challenging) Am I willing to live for them? And by the latter, I mean making conscious decisions to chose what is difficult, inconvenient, even dangerous, so that I am true to my convictions, even if no one on earth knows? I wouldn’t espouse ANY belief lightly, or without careful consideration, because as long as I wish not to live as a hypocrite, my choice of beliefs will cost me my life–whether in death or in living.
