As a writer who spends a great deal of time in my home office, I often don’t realize what my office mate is doing. That’s primarily because he’s usually snoozing while I’m attacking the keyboard with the latest manuscript, etc.
But every now and then, he will sneak by and do something completely unexpected, then return back to his “dormant” state. One of those things is to steal a snack from the table while I’m not watching.
“Who, Kangadog?” You might say, “Nawww!”

What makes this little story so memorable is not just the imagery and soundtrack, but the connection it makes to anyone who has loved a pet, lost a loved one, or experienced any of the things we saw in this commercial. It tugs on the strings that are closest to my heart, connected to the deepest love, pain, and memories.
So this morning, I hear the panicked cry of my daughter (whose hamster Diana just passed away a month ago), “Daddy, Gracie’s not in her cage.”
